SPORTS

Goalball Demonstration and Competition
Wednesday, October 1, 6:00 p.m.

FAU Recreation & Fitness Center, Boca Raton Campus (all campuses participating)

 
During Goalball, participants compete in teams of three and try to throw a ball with bells embedded in it into the opponents’ goal, while being blindfolded so the participant can experience what a team sport is like with a visual impairment.  The participants must use the sound of the bell to judge the position and movement of the ball.  A presentation and coaching will be provided by Donte’ Mickens, a U.S. Paralympic Goalball team member who participated in the Athens and Beijing Olympic Games. This event is sponsored by Office for Students with Disabilities and Campus Recreation. To register for this event, please visit www.imleagues.com/fau/registration

 

Wheelchair Basketball Demonstration and Competition
Monday, October 6, 5:30 p.m.

FAU Recreation and Fitness Center, Boca Raton Campus (all campuses participating)


Participants will either watch or be involved in a highly energetic, fast-paced wheelchair basketball tournament.  FAU students have the opportunity to experience playing basketball while using a wheelchair and can create a team consisting of five players that will compete against other FAU teams. Wheelchairs and coaching from Matt Glowacki, a member of the Paralympic games in Sydney and a wheelchair basketball expert, will be provided. This event is sponsored by Office for Students with Disabilities and Campus Recreation. To register for this event, please visit www.imleagues.com/fau/registration

 

Seated Volleyball Demonstration and Competition
Thursday October 8, 6:00 p.m.

FAU Recreation & Fitness Center, Boca Raton Campus (all campuses participating)

 

Seated volleyball (sometimes known as Paralympic volleyball), is volleyball for disabled athletes. The sport entered the Paralympic Games as a demonstration sport for amputees in 1976 in Toronto, Canada and played as a medal sport thereafter. LUNCH & DINNER

Taste of Disability Dinner 
Wednesday, October 15, 5:30 p.m.

Grand Palm Room, Student Union, Boca Raton Campus 
 
 
Students will be assigned a disability and will experience that disability throughout the dinner.  If a student assumes the role of someone who is visually impaired, for example, a blindfold will be placed over his or her eyes. If a student is assigned a physical impairment, he or she may be placed in a wheelchair.  Discussion groups will be facilitated by the OSD Club and the Office for Students with Disabilities. Taste of Disability Dinner
Tuesday, October 21, 6:00 p.m. 

The Burrow, Student Resources, Jupiter Campus

Students will be assigned a disability and will experience that disability throughout the dinner.  If a student assumes the role of someone who is visually impaired, for example, a blindfold will be placed over his or her eyes. If a student is assigned a physical impairment, he or she may be placed in a wheelchair. This event is by RSVP only. Please contact Eileen Mathis or mathise@fau.edu for RSVP at Jupiter Campus.

 

Taste of Disability Luncheon 
Thursday, October 23, 12:30 p.m.

SD 105, Davie Campus

Psychological Roundtable Discussion
Thursday, October 16, 6:00 p.m.

Psychological round table is discussion base forum by professionals in the field of psychology and mental health. Movie Presentation and Discussion

“As Good As It Gets,”
is a Romantic Comedy starring Jack Nicholson. Come enjoy this movie which is followed by a facilitated discussion regarding the theme of the movie especially the relationship to disabilities facilitated  by Dr.Kirk Dougher, Executive Director for the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Door prizes: Gift cards to Outback Steakhouse, Cheesecake Factory, and Ruby Tuesday.
