Scholarship Review
Applications for scholarships are available March 15th - May 15th for the following academic year. These applications are available from the Office for Students with Disabilities. KAREN ABERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Aberson family established this scholarship in Karen Dawn Aberson's memory hoping to provide support that may help struggling students succeed. In spite of having a severe mental disorder, Karen Aberson earned an A.A. Degree and completed many hours toward her Bachelor's. She had a strong desire to pursue an education and to help make the world better. Karen did not reach her goal; while a student at FAU, Karen committed suicide. A student with any disability may apply; however, priority is given to an undergraduate student with a documented psychological/emotional disability.
Amount: $500 (1 Award)
Criteria: Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate student in good standing with 2.0 GPA or an accepted incoming student
Any documented disability -- priority to Psychological/Emotional disability
Must successfully complete a minimum of 6 credits per semester
DAMON ANTHONY BETTENDORF SCHOLARSHIP
Damon was born with a congenital visual impairment of unknown origin. He never considered his low vision an obstacle, to his enjoyment of playing basketball, running track, music, and drawing. His self-taught proficiency of computers relates to recipients of this award. Damon's family established this scholarship in his memory for students studying computers as a tool for technical or artistic design.
Amount: $500 (1 Award)
Criteria: Currently enrolled FAU undergraduate student in good standing with 2.5 GPA or an accepted incoming student
Documented visual impairment (minimally legally blind after best possible correction)
Must successfully complete a minimum of 9 credits per semester
BOCA RATON ADVISORY BOARD FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES SCHOLARSHIP
The Boca Raton Advisory Board for People with Disabilities sponsors an annual scholarship for a student with a disability demonstrating residency in Boca Raton or Palm Beach County.
This scholarship represents the Board which serves as an advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities. The Board members personally contribute to provide this annual scholarship award.
Amount: $500 (1 Award)
Criteria: Currently enrolled undergraduate/graduate FAU student in good standing with 2.0 GPA or an accepted incoming student
Any documented disability
Must successfully complete a minimum of 3 credits per semester
Must reside in the City of Boca Raton, the Greater Boca Raton area, or Palm Beach County
STERLING H. HUNTINGTON, M.D., AND LAURA HUNTINGTON SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES
The Huntington family initiated these scholarships to support students with physical disabilities other than visual and/or hearing impairments. The scholarships reflect the area of medicine in which Sterling Huntington, M.D., worked during his life, and the continuing support of the family for the residents of Boca Raton.
Amount: $500 (3 awards)
Criteria: Currently enrolled undergraduate/graduate FAU student in good standing with 2.0 GPA or an accepted incoming student
Documented physical impairment
Must successfully complete a minimum of 3 credits per semester
Must reside in the City of Boca Raton, the Greater Boca Raton area, or Palm Beach County
RENEE LYNN LEVINSON AND PHILIP LEVINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Levinson family sponsors an annual scholarship for an FAU student with a psychological disability. The scholarship is in honor of their daughter, Renee Lynn Levinson, who graduated from FAU in June 2001 with a B.S. in Chemistry. In memoriam, this scholarship now includes the name of her father for his tireless work encouraging the academic growth of students with disabilities. This scholarship is to honor a student who succeeds despite a disability.
Amount: $500 (1 award)
Criteria: Currently enrolled undergraduate/graduate FAU student in good standing with 2.0 GPA or an accepted incoming student
Documented psychological/emotional disability
Must successfully complete a minimum of 6 credits per semester
THEODORE R. AND VIVIAN M. JOHNSON SCHOLARSHIPS
Theodore R. Johnson, a former UPS executive, established a charitable trust fund to provide scholarships to students with disabilities who are attending one of Florida’s 11 public universities. Mr. Johnson had a hearing impairment and understood the difficulties a person with a disability has to overcome; therefore, he wanted to use his money to make sure students with disabilities have the chance to be the best they can. This scholarship is competitively awarded.
Number of Awards and Amount: To Be Determined. Anticipated award amount for 2012-2013: $2000-$3000.
Criteria: Currently enrolled undergraduate FAU student in good standing with 2.0 GPA, or an accepted incoming student
Demonstrated financial need
Any documented disability
Successfully complete a minimum 9 credits per semester
Renewable scholarship for up to twelve (12) semesters
BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP
Founded under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 this congressionally-funded program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education. The Gilman Scholarship program aims to broaden the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who have been traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad and those with high financial need.
